Al-Qaeda’s leaders are dead or ailing and Islamic State has stolen the mantle as the world’s most feared terrorist organisation.
But it would be a mistake to write off the fanatical group behind the September 11 attacks 18 years ago this week, which is going through a slow and steady rebuild, counter-terrorism experts warn.
Al-Qaeda group was virtually unknown outside counter-terrorism circles before hijackers ploughed four passenger jets into the World Trade Centre in New York, the Pentagon in Washington DC and a Virginia field on September, 11, 2001, bringing down two of the world’s most recognisable skyscrapers and killing nearly 3,000 people.
