One U.S. Marine has died, two were injured and eight others were missing after a ‘tragic incident’ involving an amphibious assault vehicle off the coast of Southern California on Thursday, the U.S. Marine Corps said.

Search and rescue efforts were underway with support from the Navy and Coast Guard, the First Marine Expeditionary Force said in a tweet.

The I Marine Expeditionary Force said in a tweet: ‘1 Marine has died, 8 service members remain missing and 2 were injured after an AAV [Assault Amphibious Vehicle] mishap July 30 off the coast of Southern California.
